The Ultimate Moving Organization Checklist for Florida
Moving is consistently ranked among the most stressful life events, right up there with starting a new job and major illness. But most of that stress comes from poor planning and last-minute chaos, not from the move itself. A solid organizational plan turns a move from a week-long crisis into a manageable project with clear steps.
This checklist is tailored specifically for Florida moves -- whether you're relocating within the Orlando area, moving to Kissimmee or Celebration from out of state, or downsizing from a larger home. Florida's climate adds wrinkles that generic moving guides miss.
Six to Eight Weeks Before the Move
This is when the real work begins, and it starts with decluttering -- not packing. Every item you get rid of now is something you don't have to pack, move, unpack, and find a home for in your new space. This is the single biggest time and money saver in any move.
- Go room by room and sort items into keep, donate, sell, and trash. Be aggressive. Moving is the perfect time to let go of things you've been holding onto out of habit.
- Schedule donation pickups or drop-offs. Goodwill, Salvation Army, and local organizations in Orlando will often pick up from your home for free with advance notice.
- Sell valuable items through Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp. List them now -- selling takes time, and you don't want to be negotiating with buyers the week of your move.
- Start collecting packing supplies. Save boxes from online orders, buy packing tape and bubble wrap, and ask local stores for free boxes (liquor stores have the sturdiest).
- Get quotes from moving companies if you're hiring movers. In Orlando, peak moving season runs from May through September -- book early during those months.
If you're moving from a larger home to a smaller one, this decluttering phase is even more critical. We see clients in the Orlando area regularly who need help with downsizing projects, and the earlier you start, the less overwhelming it becomes.
Three to Four Weeks Before the Move
By now, you should have your decluttering well underway. This phase shifts to logistics and early packing.
- Change your address with USPS, your bank, insurance companies, subscriptions, and any services tied to your current address
- Transfer or set up utilities at the new home: electricity (Duke Energy or OUC in the Orlando area), water, internet, and trash service
- Start packing rooms you use least -- guest rooms, storage areas, seasonal items, and decorative pieces
- Label every box on the top AND at least one side with the room it belongs in and a brief description of contents
- Create a numbered inventory list if you want to track everything (a simple spreadsheet works)
A Florida-specific note on packing: if you're packing during summer months, do not leave packed boxes in a hot garage or in a moving truck overnight. Temperatures inside a closed vehicle or non-air-conditioned space can exceed 140 degrees. Candles, vinyl records, electronics, and anything with adhesives can warp or melt. Pack heat-sensitive items last and move them in your air-conditioned car.
One to Two Weeks Before the Move
This is the intensive packing phase. You should be packing daily, tackling one room at a time.
- Pack the kitchen (usually the most time-consuming room). Wrap dishes and glasses individually. Use packing paper rather than newspaper -- newsprint ink transfers to dishes.
- Disassemble furniture that won't fit through doors assembled. Bag and label all hardware -- tape the bag to the piece of furniture it belongs to.
- Pack a "first night" box with essentials: toilet paper, paper towels, basic cleaning supplies, phone chargers, medications, a change of clothes, sheets and pillows, and basic kitchen items (a few plates, cups, utensils, and a pan). This box goes in your car, not the moving truck.
- Clean out your refrigerator and freezer. Use up perishables and plan meals around what's left. Defrost the freezer the night before the move.
- Confirm moving company details, or confirm your truck rental and line up friends who agreed to help (remind them -- people forget).
Take photos of your electronics setup -- how cables are connected behind the TV, your computer desk setup, your router and modem configuration. When you're setting up at the new place, these photos save hours of guesswork.
Moving Day: Florida-Specific Tips
If you're moving during Florida's warmer months (which is most of the year), plan for the heat:
- Start early. Begin loading at 7 AM if possible. By noon in summer, outdoor temperatures make heavy lifting miserable and potentially dangerous.
- Hydrate aggressively. Have a cooler of water and sports drinks accessible at both locations. Florida heat plus physical labor is a dehydration recipe.
- Keep the AC running at the new place. Have utilities transferred before moving day so the new home is cool when you arrive with boxes.
- Watch for afternoon storms. Florida summer afternoons bring thunderstorms almost daily. Have tarps ready to cover boxes and furniture if you're loading or unloading and the sky darkens.
- Protect wood furniture. Humidity can cause wood to swell. If furniture sits in a humid garage or truck for extended periods, drawers may stick and joints may shift. Move wood furniture quickly between climate-controlled spaces.
After the Move: Setting Up Your New Space
Unpacking strategically is just as important as packing strategically. Resist the urge to open every box at once.
Priorities for day one: make the beds, set up the bathroom, and get the kitchen functional enough to make coffee and a basic meal. Everything else can wait.
Over the first week, unpack one room at a time, starting with the rooms you use most. As you unpack, this is your chance to organize the new space properly from the start rather than recreating the same cluttered setups from your old home.
Consider the layout of each room before putting furniture and items in their "obvious" spots. Your new kitchen might work better with a different cabinet assignment than your old one. Your new closet has different dimensions that might call for a different organizational approach.
This fresh-start moment is actually the ideal time to bring in a professional organizer. Our move-in/move-out organizing service helps you set up your new home with systems that work from day one. We unpack, organize, and establish routines for each room so you feel settled in days instead of months. We serve the entire Orlando, Kissimmee, Celebration, and Four Corners area.
